What it actually costs to legally employ a nanny

Example: a California family paying a nanny $25/hr for 40 hrs/week.

Gross wages $52,000/yr
Employer taxes (FICA, FUTA, CA SUI/ETT) ~$4,800/yr
Nest Payroll Essentials $504/yr
Total cost to employer ~$57,300/yr

Full-service payroll runs less than 1% of total wages — and removes 10–15 hours of quarterly admin plus the penalty risk that comes with filing it wrong.

Pricing FAQ

How much does household payroll cost?
Nest Payroll starts at $42/month for one household employee. That covers paycheck calculations, federal and state tax deposits, quarterly filings, year-end W-2s, and Schedule H. No setup fees, no per-payroll charges, no annual contract. Two employees is $49/month. Up to six employees is $69/month.
Are there setup fees or hidden charges?
No setup fees, no payroll-run fees, and no charges for federal EIN or state tax account registrations. The only additional fee is a one-time $149 year-end tax work charge — and that only applies if you cancel before W-2s and Schedule H are processed in January. Active subscribers never pay it.
What's actually included in the $42/month price?
Automatic paycheck calculations with correct federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state withholdings. Federal tax deposits via EFTPS and state tax deposits, handled on schedule. Quarterly federal and state filings. Year-end W-2 sent to your employee, W-3 filed with Social Security, and a signature-ready Schedule H for your personal return. You can pay your employee through Cash App, Venmo, or check. All 50 states are supported.
Do I need to pay extra for W-2s or Schedule H at year-end?
No. Year-end forms are included as long as your subscription is active when they're processed in January. If you cancel before then and still want us to handle final filings, it's a one-time $149 fee.
What if I hire a second nanny or household employee mid-year?
You'll upgrade to Essentials Plus ($49/month) for the remaining months through the following January when W-2s are processed. Your plan tier is determined by the total number of unique employees paid in a calendar year, not how many are active at any one time.
Can you handle back wages I already paid without running payroll?
Yes. If you've been paying a household employee informally, we'll back-file. Catch-up wages are $42/month per employee (3-month minimum) from the correct start date, plus a $149 year-end tax work fee per catch-up year. Once caught up, you continue on any regular plan. Estimate your back taxes →
Do I need an EIN or state tax accounts before signing up?
No. We register your federal EIN and the appropriate state accounts — income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, and any state-specific accounts (CA EDD, NY DTF, MA DOR, etc.) — as part of onboarding.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. No contract, no cancellation fee. If you cancel before year-end W-2s are processed, the optional $149 year-end fee covers final filings so your employee and the IRS still get what they need.
How long does setup take?
About 5 minutes for most families. You enter employee info, link a bank account for tax payments, and pick how you want to pay wages. State and federal account registrations finalize over a few business days, but you can run payroll in the meantime.

*Year-end tax work is included with ongoing, active subscriptions. Otherwise, W-2s and your Schedule H are $149 at the time of cancellation.

**Adding a second or third employee requires an upgrade for the remaining months through the end of the following January when W-2s are processed. The number of employees for subscription purposes is determined by the number of unique employees that are paid wages in any calendar year.

Have catch-up wages? Add catch-up when you onboard to back-file previous wages. $42/month per employee (3 month minimum) from your employee's correct start date, plus $149 year-end tax work fee per catch-up year. Once caught up, continue on any plan above.
